AS in Paralegal Studies

Program Description

The Associate of Science in Paralegal Studies prepares students for employment as skilled paralegals capable of supporting attorneys in a variety of legal settings. Through a combination of theoretical instruction and practical skill development, the program provides students with a solid understanding of the legal system, substantive areas of law, and the ethical responsibilities of legal professionals.

Students begin their studies with foundational courses such as Introduction to Paralegal Studies (PLA1003), Legal Terminology (PLA1005), and Introduction to the Legal System (PLA1013), gaining familiarity with legal concepts, the structure of the court system, and the role of the paralegal in legal practice. Courses in Business Law I (BUL2241) and Business Law II (BUL2242) further develop students understanding of contracts, commercial transactions, and regulatory frameworks.

A strong emphasis is placed on developing practical competencies essential in the legal field. Through Legal Research and Writing (PLA1114), students learn to locate, analyze, and apply legal authority, as well as draft professional legal documents. Civil Procedure (PLA1203) provides insight into litigation processes, including pleadings, motions, discovery, and trial preparation.

Students explore a broad range of legal specialties, including Tort Law (PLA2273), Criminal Law (PLA2304), Criminal Procedure (PLA2305), Family Law (PLA1800), and Wills, Trusts, and Probate (PLA1600), allowing them to understand diverse areas of practice and gain specialized knowledge valued in the workplace. Real Estate Law (PLA2614) adds further depth, preparing students to assist with property transactions, title work, and real estate documents.

Graduates are prepared for entry-level employment as paralegals or legal assistants in law firms, corporate legal departments, government agencies, courts, and other legal environments. The program equips students with the critical thinking, research, writing, and procedural knowledge needed to assist attorneys effectively and ethically. This degree also provides a strong foundation for students who wish to continue their education in advanced legal studies or pursue related bachelors degree programs.
